Biography
Suzy González obtained her MFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and her BFA in Painting from Texas State University. She received a 2017 NALAC Fund for the Arts Grant for the curatorial project, Comida es Medicina. She completed the NALAC Leadership Institute in 2018 and is a current fellow with the Intercultural Leadership Institute. She has attended residencies at Vermont Studio Center (VT), the Trelex Residency (Peru), The Wassaic Residency (NY), Starry Night Residency (NM), the Studios at MASS MoCA (MA), and Hello Studio (TX). Her upcoming solo exhibition, The Husks We’re In, will open to the public on November 16th at Palo Alto College. She is half of the collective Dos Mestizx, who completed a large-scale public artwork at the San Antonio International Airport early this year. She is also half of Yes, Ma’am zine, which focuses on intersectional feminism and free speech. She is an artist, curator, organizer, and self-publisher living and working in San Antonio, TX.
Artist Statement
I focus on material hierarchy and its relationship to the art world elitism. I find interest in the decolonization of one’s diet, or a desire to reclaim the plant-based nourishment of our ancestors. In embodying a neo-Mestiza/Xicana identity, I use oil paints alongside natural materials, particularly the corn husk. This opens up gendered ideas of nature and culture as well as the disconnect between craft/folk art and fine art. Our husks, our skins, have ties to our individual and collective backgrounds, consumptions, environments, identities, and cultures. What would they say if they could speak? What does it look like to recognize the colonization of art and how can we work towards its decolonization? My work visually dismantles social binaries in order to better understand complexities of identity. I see fourth wave feminism as intersectional and inclusive of the non-human animal kingdom. This, I hope, will open the doors to compassion and healing in this world of destruction.
