Brick Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition, Moments, featuring artist Maya Sokovic. A preview will be held on Thursday, January 2nd from 6-10pm and will be followed by the First Friday opening reception on January 3rd from 6-10pm.

Utilizing acrylic paint and soft pastels, Sokovic creates abstract paintings that capture the complexities of life and nature. Inspired by the Adriatic Sea (the body of water separating the Italian and Balkan peninsulas) and the Danube River (Europe’s second-longest river, which flows through 10 countries), this body of work juxtaposes the softness of water-washed paint with the craggy edges of pastel lines. Sokovic explores how life has moments of serenity and chaos, much like the bodies of water she finds so intriguing.

Focusing her color palette on hues of blue and green, Sokovic anchors her composition’s near the center of the canvas leaving breathing room around the edges. These minimalist compositions, along with her keenly selected color palette, invite calmness and clarity with just a hint of chaos in the red, orange, and yellow pastel lines.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Originally from Belgrade, Serbia, Maya Sokovic currently lives and works in San Antonio, Texas. Sokovi creates abstract paintings as visual orations of memories, dreams, feelings, and her personal history. Maya received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Fine Arts in Belgrade. Her art has been exhibited internationally, published in books, and can be found in private collections in the United States and Europe.

ABOUT BRICK GALLERY
Founded in 2019, Brick Gallery is an experimental arts space housed within Brick at Blue Star in San Antonio, TX. Brick Gallery is focused on supporting San Antonio and Texas-connected artists, hosting monthly exhibitions of local and regional artists with opening receptions on the First Thursday and First Friday of the month. We are dedicated to supporting the conception of experimental contemporary art in San Antonio. Our goal is to engage local talent and provide a supportive gallery space where artists can pursue ideas beyond the boundaries of a traditional practice. The gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 5PM-10PM and Saturday and Sunday, 12PM-10PM.
