About the Artists:
Sonya Marie Sky is an emerging artist born in the US-Mexico border town of Laredo, Texas. Raised in a household that upheld traditional machismo ideologies, her work is reaction and exploration of the social and domestic Mexican and American cultural constructs that surrounded her. Sky received her Bachelor of Arts in Art from Texas A&M International University in the Fall of 2013 and has exhibited works throughout Texas. She is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Texas at San Antonio and is expected to graduate in the Spring of 2020.
Jonathan Treviño, SA native and founder of Heritage Studio, is a photographer, filmmaker, and creative director, who earned his BFA in photography with Honors from Parsons, The New School for Design; twice named the best art school in America by QS World University Rankings. For Luminaria 2019, Treviño will screen his Texas Vision Award-winning film, Blue Sweep, at the San Antonio River grotto, in concert with an introduction to his Heritage project, a personal case study of history as identity. The presentation seeks to inspire festival-goers to investigate their own ancestral identity, while challenging the effect the law has on the narrative of history and, thus, our identity.
Jose Villalobos grew up on the US/Mexico border in El Paso, TX, and was raised in a traditional conservative family. His oeuvre reconciles the identity challenges in his life, caught in between traditional Mexican customs and American mores, as well as growing up with religious ideals that contrast with being gay. In his artistic practice, Villalobos explores traditionally “masculine” objects and softens the virility of these objects. Villalobos received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2016. He was awarded the Artist Lab Fellowship Grant that same year for his work De La Misma Piel at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Since then Villalobos has been awarded the Joan Micthell Painters and Sculptors Grant in 2018. He has exhibited and performed at Mexic-Arte Museum, Austin, TX; El Paso Museum of Art, TX; El Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juarez, Mexico; and Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum, San Antonio, TX.
