ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
An exhibition of drawings from San Antonio artist and educator Ashley Mireles that explores curiosity. A series of portraits of people in the act of looking at art – the drawings focus on the subjects’ inspection, captivation, loss of awareness, and so on. As viewers take the time to look, Mireles hopes they may experience the same sense of captivation. That feeling of when you look at art and forget about time, just for those few seconds or minute? We do this in self-reflection too, get lost in ideas and the meaning of a piece. Sometimes when we look at art, we don’t just lose track of something because we’re investigating or wondering, but we also for a moment become un-embodied, blissfully unaware of our bodies in movement.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Ashley Mireles is a San Antonio-based artist that produces drawings, prints, and murals for public consumption. Employing both homage and social critique, along with humor, she uses an illustrative style to explore cultural issues, gender roles, and the human condition. Mireles has exhibited nationally with a forthcoming public art commission to open to the City of San Antonio in 2020. Mireles’ artwork has been collected by the National Museum of Mexican Art, Mexic-Arte Museum, Zuckerman Museum of Art, Texas Christian University Print Collection, City of San Antonio, and University of Texas Libraries Special Collections. Her work has been published in The American Statesman, Huffington Post, and Mitú.
ABOUT THE GALLERY:
Established in 2019, Brick Haus Co. is an experimental arts space housed within the Brick at Blue Star. Our goal is to support the creation and display of contemporary art in San Antonio. We host monthly exhibitions of local and regional artists with opening receptions on the First Thursday and First Friday of the month. Brick Haus Co. is located in the Southtown Arts District in San Antonio, Texas at the Blue Star Arts Complex.
