An Incredible Weight/Wait

An Incredible Weight/Wait

Poetic Objects by Sarah Francis Hollis and Taylor Maupin

This Call and Response show deals with objects that depict Personal testimony from artist Sarah Francis Hollis and an interpretation of those objects by artist Taylor Maupin.

This body of work is an expression of domestic violence, a personal narrative, a call to action: “An Incredible Weight/Wait” examines the destruction caused by a violent relationship within the context of personal testimony.

Taking inspiration from the #MeToo movement, the narrative of “Weight/Wait” smolders across these sixteen panels. Seared on the face of these pine cards is a story of pain, despair, but ultimately a personal choice for one’s own safety and person-hood in the face of cruelty and indifference. The goal of this piece is to serve as both a personal account and shout of support and reassurance for all those touched by gender-based violence and harassment.

Taylor Maupin creates artwork about memory and piecing together experience through unclear or unambiguous recollections such as dreams. In this show, she responds to Sarah’s initial poem exploring ideas such as relics and remnants of these past relationships.

Sarah and Taylor’s work play to two sides of an intense experience, processing the personal experience of domestic violence and processing the testimony of others with empathy.
